Activities

Several mentors have raised questions about what to do with kids to have fun and build relationships in a learning environment. Please comment with ideas.

  1. Here are a few improvisational games that may work. Our group found a version of the alphabet game (below) to be very fun.

  2. How about doing Mad Libs with the mentees.

Another would be to do short stories (3 to 5 pages) and discuss with the mentees.

Why not ask the mentees what they would like to do in a learning enviroment.

My partner and I mentor 3 girls and I would like to teach them how to knit.

  3. Why isn't there a choice for comments to be entered under email address?

  4. My three mentees (all girls) LOVE anything crafty - last time I brought different colored construction paper, some stickers, scissors and glue and we made valentines. I've found when they're involved in such an activity they are much more comfortable talking about family, school, etc. and I can more quickly assess what issues might be going on in their lives that need greater attention.

  5. Is there a possibility for groups on a rotating basis to go outside in the nice weather...Shoot some baskets?? I totally agree that when people, all people are distracted in some way with something they enjoy it makes for an eager and natural flow of conversation. (Ping pong is our families' secret door to communication with teens) As the crafts work for some, perhaps we could incorporate something physical for others who are more wired that way.
